Materials You'll Need
- 1.5 yards of terry cloth fabric (at least 54" wide for a generous beach towel size)
- ½ yard coordinating quilting cotton or canvas (for a decorative border or pocket)
- Coordinating thread
- Rotary cutter, cutting mat, and ruler
- Sewing machine with a stretch or universal needle
- Iron and pressing surface
- Serger or zigzag stitch for finishing edges (optional but recommended)
Finished Size
A standard beach towel measures approximately 30" × 60". Using 1.5 yards of 54"-wide terry cloth gives you a generous 54" × 54" square — trim to your preferred dimensions, or keep the full width for an extra-large towel.
Step 1 — Pre-Wash Your Terry Cloth
Terry cloth shrinks significantly on the first wash. Always pre-wash and dry your terry cloth before cutting — this prevents your finished towel from distorting after its first use. Wash in warm water and tumble dry on medium heat. Press lightly if needed, using a low iron setting on the wrong side.
Step 2 — Cut and Square Up
After pre-washing, trim your terry cloth to your desired finished dimensions plus 1" on all sides for hemming. Use a long ruler and rotary cutter for clean, straight edges — terry cloth can shift easily, so pin or weight the fabric before cutting.
Step 3 — Finish the Edges
There are two main approaches to finishing the edges of a beach towel:
Option A — Simple Hem
Fold each raw edge ½" toward the wrong side and press, then fold another ½" and press again. Stitch close to the inner folded edge all the way around. Miter the corners neatly for a professional finish — fold each corner diagonally before folding the hem to eliminate bulk.
Option B — Decorative Cotton Border
Cut strips of coordinating quilting cotton 3" wide and long enough to border all four sides of the towel. Press each strip in half lengthwise, then wrap it around the raw edge of the towel (encasing the edge like binding) and stitch through all layers. This adds a beautiful pop of color and pattern, and is especially effective with a bold novelty print or floral fabric border.
Step 4 — Add a Pocket (Optional)
A small patch pocket is a practical addition to a beach towel — perfect for holding sunscreen, a phone, or keys. Cut a rectangle of coordinating cotton fabric approximately 8" × 9". Fold and press the top edge down ½" twice and stitch to hem. Fold the remaining three edges under ½" and press. Position the pocket on one end of the towel and topstitch in place around the three folded sides, backstitching at the top corners for reinforcement.
Step 5 — Add a Hanging Loop (Optional)
Cut a 2" × 6" strip of coordinating cotton fabric. Fold in thirds lengthwise and press, then topstitch along both long edges. Fold in half to form a loop and stitch securely to one corner of the towel. This makes it easy to hang the towel on a hook or beach bag.

- For the decorative border or pocket, use a 100% quilting cotton that coordinates with the terry cloth color

Care Instructions
Machine wash in warm water. Tumble dry on medium heat. Avoid fabric softener — it reduces the absorbency of terry cloth over time. Shake the towel out before drying to restore the loop texture.
