Here in Texas, we know a thing or two about humidity. It's great for our skin and not so great for our fabric stash. Damp air can lead to musty smells, mildew spots, and fabric that just doesn't feel fresh anymore. The good news is a few simple habits keep your fabric happy for years.
1. Keep It Inside the Air Conditioning
Air conditioning doesn't just cool the air, it pulls moisture out too. That makes a closet or shelf inside your home a much better spot than a garage, attic, or shed, where heat and humidity swing all day long.
2. Let Your Fabric Breathe
It's tempting to seal everything in plastic bins, but airtight containers can trap moisture inside, especially if the fabric went in a little damp. Better options include:
- Open shelving in a cool, dry room
- Cotton or canvas storage bags
- Plastic bins with a few small holes or a moisture absorber tucked inside
3. Use Moisture Absorbers
Silica gel packets or closet moisture absorbers are an easy win. Tuck them into bins and drawers, and check or replace them every few months. In the muggy summer months, you might be surprised how fast they fill up.
4. Keep Fabric Out of the Sun
Sunlight fades fabric over time, especially along the folds that face out. If your shelves are near a window, add a curtain or keep the fabric in closed cabinets or bins.
5. Refold Every So Often
Fabric folded the same way for a long time can develop permanent creases and faded lines. Every few months, unfold and refold your favorites along different lines. It's also a great excuse to fall in love with your stash all over again.
6. Store It Clean and Dry
Make sure fabric is completely dry before you put it away, especially after pre-washing. Even a little dampness in the center of a folded piece can lead to mildew.
Uh Oh, It Smells Musty. Now What?
-
Air it out in a dry, shady spot for a day.
-
Wash washable fabrics on a gentle cycle and dry them completely.
-
Spot mildew early. Small spots on cotton can often be washed out, but catch them fast before they set.
-
Store separately anything that smells off until it's fully refreshed, so it doesn't affect the rest of your stash.
A Few Extra Tips
- Avoid cardboard boxes for long-term storage. They absorb moisture and attract pests.
- Wrap special fabrics like silk or heirloom pieces in acid-free tissue.
- Label your bins so you're not unpacking everything to find one fat quarter.
