Whether you're sewing for a wedding, Eid, Diwali, or a family celebration, making your own lehenga or dupatta is such a special project. The right fabric and trim can turn a simple design into something truly stunning. Here's what to think about before you buy.

Choosing Fabric by Garment

Lehenga Skirt

A lehenga needs fabric with enough body to hold its flare, or enough drape to flow beautifully when you move. Popular choices include raw silk, brocade, velvet, georgette, and net layered over a lining. Heavier fabrics give a structured, regal look. Lighter fabrics feel airy and graceful.

How much to buy: it depends a lot on the flare and your measurements. A simple A-line can take around 3 to 4 yards, while a very full, panelled lehenga can take 6 yards or more. Always follow your pattern or your tailor's guidance.

Choli or Saree Blouse

Blouses usually match or contrast the lehenga or saree. Silk, brocade, and velvet are classic choices. Most blouses need around 1 yard, plus lining.

Dupatta

Dupattas are all about drape. Chiffon, georgette, organza, and net are lovely because they float and layer well. Most dupattas are around 2 1/2 meters long, or a little under 3 yards.

Picking the Right Trim

Trim is where the magic happens. An embroidered border can tie your whole outfit together.

  • Wide borders look beautiful along the hem of a lehenga or the edges of a dupatta.
  • Narrow trims work well on blouse sleeves, necklines, and as an accent alongside a wider border.
  • Match the weight. Heavy trim on a very sheer dupatta can pull and pucker. Lighter fabrics look best with lighter trims.

How Much Trim Do I Need?

Measure every edge you plan to trim and add them together, then add about 10% extra for corners, joins, and mistakes.

Example: For a dupatta around 98" long and 40" wide, trimming all four sides is about 276". Add 10% and you'll want about 8 1/2 yards of trim.

For a lehenga hem, measure around the bottom of the skirt. Full skirts can have a surprisingly long hem, so measure carefully before you order.

Tips for a Beautiful Finish

  • Test before you wash. Many special occasion fabrics and embellished trims are best dry cleaned. Test a small scrap first if you're unsure.
  • Hand baste trim first. It keeps the border straight and makes machine stitching much easier.
  • Use a press cloth. Silk, velvet, and embroidery all appreciate a gentle iron and a layer of protection.
  • Order trim and fabric together so you can match colors in natural light.
