The Forget Me Not quilt along is a beautiful hexagonal quilting project timed to complete in November — Alzheimer's Awareness Month. It's a meaningful way to combine the joy of quilting with raising awareness for a cause that touches many families.

This project is worked in English Paper Piecing (EPP) using 1-inch hexagons, building outward from a central flower motif. Follow the 11 steps below to complete your own Forget Me Not quilt.

Materials

  • 1-inch hexagon papers or templates
  • Navy blue fabric (for center and accent hexagons)
  • Beige dotted fabric (for surrounding hexagons)
  • Assorted prints: small flowers, leaves, stripes, and tiles
  • Needle, thread, and scissors
  • Rotary cutter and binding fabric for finishing

Step 1 — Make the Center Flower

Cut your hexagons and prepare your center. For the first flower, you'll need: 6 solid navy blue hexagons, 6 navy striped hexagons, and 18 beige dotted hexagons. Stitch the navy pieces together in a circular arrangement, then attach the beige hexagons around the outside to complete the first flower ring.

Step 2 — Expand the Flower

Prepare 36 navy hexagons with a two-sided leaf print. Arrange them in sets of 1, 2, and 3 in a linear pattern, stitch together, then attach them around the outer beige ring — leaving one block gap between each leaf grouping.

Step 3 — Make Six Small Accent Flowers

For each accent flower, use 1 navy tiled hexagon as the center surrounded by 5 beige flower-print hexagons, stitched in a circular arrangement. Make 6 of these in total and set aside.

Step 4 — Add Beige Rings to Accent Flowers

Stitch a ring of beige dotted hexagons around each of the 6 accent flowers from Step 3.

Step 5 — Join Accent Flowers to the Main Flower

Attach the 6 accent flower units to the sides of the main center flower. Add 2 extra beige hexagons in each gap between the navy triangular sections to fill in smoothly.

Step 6 — Add Half Flowers

Make 6 half-flower units using 24 navy blue hexagons and 6 two-leaf hexagons. Attach each half-flower as a cap along the outer beige edge of the main flower.

Step 7 — Add the Outer Beige Ring

Prepare 30 beige dotted hexagons and stitch them around the entire outer edge of the growing center medallion.

Step 8 — Add a Scrappy Blue Border

Stitch a scrappy border of blue hexagons all the way around the outer beige ring to add depth and definition to the design.

Step 9 — Build the Star Points

To transform the circular design into a star shape, prepare: 120 dark navy double-leaf hexagons, 114 mixed beige-and-blue hexagons, and 24 tiled blue hexagons. Join them in M-shaped units (beige-and-blue on the outer edges, tiled blue as the focal point on each tip). Make 6 M-shaped units and stitch them onto the center medallion.

Step 10 — Add the Second-to-Last Layer

Attach alternating beige and blue rhombus and hexagon pieces at each dip of the outermost dark blue star layer. This rounds the star shape back into a circle and serves as the penultimate layer.

Step 11 — Complete the Final Layer

Stitch 270 beige dotted hexagons around the entire outer edge to square up the quilt into a rectangular shape suitable for finishing.

Finishing

Trim the edges with a rotary cutter, add a border if desired, and bind the quilt to complete your Forget Me Not project. Whether you display it as a wall hanging or use it as a lap quilt, it's a lasting tribute to Alzheimer's awareness — and a stunning piece of textile art.
