What exactly is 108" wide quilt backing?
Standard quilting cotton runs about 42" to 44" wide. Wide quilt backing is roughly 108" across, about two and a half times the width. That extra width means one continuous piece of fabric can cover the entire back of most quilts, from baby quilts to throw quilts to queens, without any piecing at all.
Why quilters switch to wide backing

No seams to sew or press. Skip the math, the matching, and a foot of extra seams along the back. Cut, pin, and quilt.

It quilts flatter. Pieced backs can pucker or stretch unevenly along the seams. One smooth layer behaves better under the needle.

It usually costs about the same. A throw quilt needs around 2 yards of 108" backing versus about 4 yards of standard width, so wide backing is often no more expensive for a lot less work.

It looks intentional. Modern prints, watercolor gradients, batiks and reproduction florals make the back feel like part of the design, not an afterthought.
Which quilts does it fit?
A throw quilt (around 60" x 70") needs about 2 yards. A queen (90" x 108") needs about 3 1/4 yards. If your quilt top is 100" wide or less in one direction, one unbroken piece of wide backing will cover it.
