Wondering How Many Yards of Fabric Are in a Layer Cake?

Winter is the perfect season to settle in and start a new quilting project. A warm quilt, a cup of coffee, and a cozy evening — it doesn't get better than that. If you're planning your first quilt and wondering what a "layer cake" is and how much fabric it contains, you're in the right place.

What Is a Layer Cake in Sewing?

Despite the name, a layer cake in sewing has nothing to do with dessert! It's a precut fabric bundle made up of 10-inch squares — typically 42 squares per bundle — coordinated by color, design, or theme. "Layer Cake" is a trademark term used by Moda Fabrics, though other manufacturers offer similar 10-inch square bundles under different names.

These precut bundles save time, reduce fabric waste, and give you a beautifully coordinated mix of prints right out of the package — perfect for quilters of all skill levels.

How Many Yards of Fabric Are in a Layer Cake?

A standard Moda layer cake contains 42 squares, each measuring 10" x 10". Here's the math:

  • 42 squares × 100 square inches each = 4,200 square inches of fabric
  • One yard of 44"-wide fabric = approximately 1,584 square inches
  • 4,200 ÷ 1,584 = approximately 2.65 yards of fabric total

Keep in mind this is a rough equivalent — the fabric comes in individual squares, not continuous yardage, so how far it goes depends on your pattern and layout.

What Size Quilt Can a Layer Cake Make?

The finished quilt size depends on your pattern, block layout, and whether you add sashing or borders. Here are some general planning guidelines:

  • Throw quilt (~57" x 67"): Sew all 42 squares in a 6×7 layout with no sashing
  • Throw with sashing (~71" x 82"): Same layout with a 2" sashing strip between each block
  • Queen quilt: Plan for at least 2 layer cakes plus background and border fabric
  • King quilt: Plan for 3 layer cakes plus background, borders, binding, and backing

Always follow your specific pattern for accurate yardage — these are estimates to help you plan.

Common Precut Fabric Sizes

  • Layer Cake: 10" × 10" squares (~42 per bundle) — Shop layer cakes
  • Charm Pack: 5" × 5" squares (~40–42 per bundle) — Shop charm packs
  • Jelly Roll: 2.5" × width-of-fabric strips (~40 per bundle) — Shop jelly rolls
  • Fat Quarter: 18" × 22" cuts — great for larger blocks
  • Fat Eighth: 9" × 22" cuts — ideal for accents and smaller projects

Many precuts feature pinked (zigzag-cut) edges to prevent fraying during storage. Trim those edges before cutting your pieces for accurate measurements.
