Batiks glow in simple patterns like nine patches, half-square triangles and strip quilts, where the color does the work. Their tight weave also makes them great for appliqué, table runners, wall hangings, tote bags, pillow covers and simple tops and skirts.

What Is Batik Fabric?

Batik is made with a wax-resist technique that originated in Indonesia: wax is applied to the fabric in a pattern, then the fabric is dyed, and the waxed areas resist the color. Batik quilting fabrics are typically woven tightly, and the color goes through the fabric, so the back looks almost like the front. That tight weave makes batiks a favorite for appliqué, sharp piecing and vibrant, glowing quilts.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do batik fabrics bleed?
Dark and bright batiks can release dye in the first wash. Prewash them in cold water with a color catcher sheet, especially before pairing them with light fabrics.

What's the difference between batik and regular quilting cotton?
Batiks are usually more tightly woven and dyed through, so both sides look nearly the same. Printed quilting cotton has the design on one side only.

Can I use batik fabric for clothing?
Yes. Batik cottons work well for shirts, skirts, aprons and bags. They're crisper than lawn or rayon, so they suit structured styles best.

What is a batik stack pack?
A stack pack is a bundle of 10" batik squares, similar to a layer cake. It's a quick way to build a quilt with a whole coordinated batik collection.
