Layer Cakes: 10 Inch Fabric Squares

Moda Layer Cakes

Moda layer cakes hold 42 squares, each 10" x 10", cut from a single fabric line so every piece works together. French General fans can choose Fleur De Paris or Joie De Vivre, and Barbara Brackman's Morris Muse brings William Morris style florals. For something playful, Ruby Star Society's Strawberry and Hello Alice are hard to beat. Saltwater has a relaxed coastal feel, and Summer Solstice Wovens gives you woven plaids and checks in 10" squares.

Solid Layer Cakes

Need a background or a calm partner for busy prints? Bella Solids layer cakes come in one color per stack: White, Snow and Natural. Bella Solids 2025 mixes colors from across the Bella range, and the Tula Pink Solids stack gives you her bright solid palette.

RJR Patty Cakes and 10x10 Packs

RJR calls its layer cakes Patty Cakes or 10x10 Packs. Batik lovers can pick Blossom Batiks Horizon or Blossom Batiks Splash. Garden Toile and Butterflies in the Garden lean classic and floral, Camp Creek brings the outdoors in, and Chatterbox is bright and modern. Fiorella Digiprint uses digital printing for painterly florals, and Merry, Berry & Bright is ready for holiday sewing.

Robert Kaufman Ten Squares, Kaffe Fassett and More

Robert Kaufman's version is called Ten Squares. Try Cobalt Bliss or Golden Feathers, or for Christmas, Artisan Batiks Twinkle Lights and Holiday Flourish Forest Glen. Kaffe Fassett Collective squares come in Hot and Cool colorways. Tonga Treats Crystal is a batik stack from Timeless Treasures, and Mori No Tomodachi from Cotton + Steel has sweet Japanese-inspired prints.

Easy Layer Cake Projects

One layer cake makes a baby quilt or a small lap quilt with almost no cutting. Try a disappearing nine patch, simple patchwork with a border, or big half-square triangles: stack two squares right sides together, sew around all four edges, then cut on both diagonals for eight HSTs. Leftover squares make quick table runners and pillow covers. Want smaller pieces? Browse our mini charm packs, jelly rolls, or all our precut fabric.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many squares are in a layer cake?
Most hold 40 to 42 squares, each 10" x 10". Each product page lists the exact count.

How much fabric is in a layer cake?
A 42-square layer cake is roughly 2 3/4 yards of 42" wide fabric. Our Fabric Yardage Calculator can help you figure out how many stacks your quilt needs.

What's the difference between a layer cake and a charm pack?
Charm packs use 5" squares, so one 10" layer cake square cuts into four charms. That makes layer cakes the better pick for larger blocks.

Can I see them in person?
Of course. Stop by our Richmond, TX shop, or order online and choose free local pickup. Hours and directions are on our Visit Us page.
